Tonemi is a language-learning app. It has no advertising, no analytics trackers, and nothing about you is sold or shared for marketing. This page says exactly what the app collects, where it goes, how long it stays, and how you get rid of it.

1. Your account

You can use Tonemi with an anonymous account, which has no email address and no name attached to it — just an identifier held on your device. If you sign in with an email address, that address is held by Supabase, the service that handles sign-in. The app's own database never stores your email; it only ever sees the account identifier Supabase issues.

2. What you do in the app

Tonemi keeps a running record of your learning so it can show progress and decide what to review next. That record includes:

This record is append-only — entries are added, never edited — which is what makes progress and review history trustworthy. It can be deleted on request (§6).

3. Voice recordings

Some exercises ask you to speak, and the tutor also accepts spoken answers. These recordings behave differently depending on what you are doing.

Graded attempts

When an exercise grades how you said something, that recording is sent to Tonemi's server and passed to Google's Gemini model, which listens to it and returns the grade. This only happens once you have agreed to the app's AI features (§4). The recording is not kept afterwards unless you have turned on keeping (below).

Spoken tutor answers

When you answer the tutor by voice, the audio is sent through Tonemi’s server to Google’s Gemini model, which uses it to understand and answer you, once you have agreed to the app's AI features (§4). It is not kept after the request unless you have turned on keeping below.

Practice takes you play back to yourself

When you record yourself just to hear it back against a native speaker, that audio stays on your device and is never uploaded — unless you have turned on keeping.

Turning on keeping

There is a single switch, off by default, in onboarding and in your settings. Its wording is:

Keep my practice recordings to improve grading and speech features, including training our own speech models.

With it on, eligible learner-owned recordings described above are stored in a private cloud bucket, each as an audio file plus a small record of the language, what you were asked to say, the grade if there was one, the time, and a snapshot of this consent. Your sign-in credential is never stored alongside them. Recordings are used to test and improve the grading, and may be used to train Tonemi's own speech models — that is the purpose named in the sentence above, and it is the only purpose they are used for. They are not sold, published, or given to anyone else.

If the wording of that sentence ever changes, everyone is asked again; a consent given against old wording does not carry over.

Turning it off

Off means erased. Switching it off immediately deletes every recording of yours from the bucket — all of them, not just new ones — and stops any further audio being kept. There is no waiting period and nothing to email anyone about.

4. Who else sees any of this

Tonemi uses five outside services, each doing one job, none of them given your data for their own purposes:

Nothing reaches Gemini until you agree to it. The app asks the first time you use one of its AI features — the tutor, Conversation Help, lessons and worksheets made from your practice, audio lessons, and the grading of what you say in those lessons — and names Google when it asks. You can take the agreement back in your settings, which closes those features. The written course, your saved words and your decks work without it.

Photos. Conversation Help can explain a photo you take or choose, such as a menu, a sign or a message. The app asks for camera or photo access only when you tap to take or choose one. Your phone reads the text in the photo itself and only that text is sent; if your phone cannot read that language, a smaller copy of the photo is sent through Tonemi’s server to Gemini instead. The photo itself is not kept. What was read from it and the explanation are saved with your phrases, like anything else you ask Conversation Help, and are deleted with your account (§6).

Cloudflare keeps ordinary web-server logs of requests, including IP addresses, as any website's host does. Tonemi runs no analytics, no advertising, and embeds no third-party tracking code.

5. How long things are kept

6. Your choices

If you are in the UK, EU or a US state with a privacy law, those rights are yours by law and the same address is how you use them. Nobody has to give a reason.

7. Children

Tonemi is intended only for adults aged 18 and older. The current Google Gemini API terms do not permit this app’s Gemini-backed features to be directed toward or likely to be accessed by people under 18. Younger audiences may be considered in the future only after the provider, consent, privacy, and safety requirements have been redesigned.

8. Changes to this page

The date at the top is when this page last changed. A change to what happens to your recordings is not made by editing this page — the consent sentence itself is versioned, and changing it re-asks everyone.
